Tirzepatide may cause serious side effects. These include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and acute kidney injury. There is a potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, as observed in animal studies. Report any severe abdominal pain, vision changes, or signs of an allergic reaction to your provider immediately. Discuss your medical history thoroughly before starting treatment.
Contraindications
Do not use Tirzepatide if you or your family have a personal history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Do not use if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity to Tirzepatide or any of its components. It is not for use in patients with type 1 diabetes.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and abdominal pain. These side effects are often mild to moderate and may decrease over time as your body adjusts to the medication. If side effects persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Drug Interactions
Tirzepatide can affect the absorption of oral medications due to delayed gastric emptying. Use caution when co-administering with oral contraceptives, as their efficacy may be reduced. Discuss all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking with your healthcare provider to identify potential interactions.
Important Safety Information
Before starting Tirzepatide, discuss your full medical history with your healthcare provider. This includes any history of thyroid problems, pancreatitis, kidney disease, or diabetic retinopathy. Do not share your Kwikpen with others, even if the needle is changed. Sharing pens can result in the transmission of infection. This medication is not a substitute for insulin and should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes. Monitor for signs of serious side effects and seek medical attention if they occur.
