Indication & Clinical Use

Ozempic is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and established cardiovascular disease.

It may be prescribed off-label by a healthcare provider for weight management as part of a supervised program.

Dosing & Administration

Ozempic is administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. Treatment typically begins with a low dose, which is gradually increased by your healthcare provider over several weeks. This titration helps minimize potential side effects and allows your body to adjust to the medication.

The specific dose, such as 1mg, is determined by your prescribing clinician based on your individual needs and tolerance.

What It Is

Ozempic is a prescription medication containing semaglutide. It is an injectable treatment primarily used to improve blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 Diabetes.

It may also be prescribed as part of a comprehensive weight management program under medical supervision.

How It Works

Semaglutide works by mimicking a natural hormone in your body called GLP-1. This hormone helps regulate blood sugar by increasing insulin release when blood sugar is high. It also slows down stomach emptying and can reduce appetite.

Benefits

For individuals with Type 2 Diabetes, Ozempic helps lower A1C levels. When used in a weight management program, it can support weight loss efforts.

It offers the convenience of a once-weekly administration.

Important Safety Information

Serious Warnings & Precautions

Serious side effects can occur. These include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems (gallstones), acute kidney injury, and severe allergic reactions. There is a potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors based on animal studies; it is unknown if this occurs in humans.

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience persistent severe abdominal pain, yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of an allergic reaction.

Contraindications

Ozempic should not be used in individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). It is also contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any of its components.

It is not indicated for use in Type 1 Diabetes.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. These effects are often mild and tend to decrease over time as your body adjusts to the medication.

Headache, fatigue, and indigestion may also occur.

Drug Interactions

Semaglutide can affect the absorption of orally administered medications due to slowed gastric emptying. Caution should be exercised when co-administering oral medications, especially those with a narrow therapeutic index.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Important Safety Information

Ozempic is a prescription medication. Use exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not share your pen. Monitor for signs of serious side effects and report them promptly.
